Our seasonal resident Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are back! Actually, they’ve been back for about a week, but I’ve been waiting for some sun to align with my schedule to try to capture the iridescence in their feathers. This clip is from late this morning. There are two films in one. The first is regular speed — over in 11 seconds.; the second in slo mo — at 10% speed, and still it is fast!

Ruby-throated Hummingbird, male

I’ve seen two come to our feeder on the balcony so far, both males. I hope some females show up soon as well. I am more than happy to supplement their diet with some sugar water (4:1) after their long journey here. They are known to migrate almost 1000 miles — pretty impressive for birds that weigh 3-3.5 grams! And I am more than happy to offer them free rent in any of our potted plants should they need a place to nest — though I doubt they will.
