We have a surprising amount of wildlife in our “backyard,” thanks to the fact that River Towers, our condo association, abuts Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, a part of the NPS George Washington Memorial Parkway. Despite this, it is not easy to record wildlife here in this urbanized area — lots of noise pollution from a variety of sources — but once in awhile I get lucky! Here are a few of my favorite “backyard” audio recordings for 2020.
This might be my favorite “backyard” recording this year, a drumming Downy Woodpecker. As he drummed on different parts of a snag, it produced different sounds.
But this one is spectacular! A trio of Barred Owls singing in the rain, complete with caterwauling!
A murder of crows, fish crows specifically, who are likely harassing at least one Barred Owl at the nest site.
And last, but not least, a pair of Red Fox mating and temporarily stuck in a copulatory lock. An unusual backyard audio recording for sure!
